AS newcomers to the Scottish Hydro Electric Division One Selkirk will face some touch challenges this season, but they gave themselves the perfect lift yesterday by rampaging to a stunning final win in their own sevens tournament.
In a ground packed with proud ‘Souters’ raucously cheering their team on, Selkirk came from 5-0 down to score eight tries through Gavin Craig (2), Ross Nixon (3), Lee Jones, Fraser Harkness and skipper Neil Darling and run away from a skilful Newcastle side of academy and university recruits, which included Scotland age-grade internationalist Lewis Calder. It clearly made up for last weekend’s final defeat at Kelso.

Kevin Barrie, the Selkirk coach, said: “It was nice to start with a good win over Kelso because they’ve been our bogey team for a while, and the momentum just built from there.”

First round: Selkirk 39 Kelso 0, Biggar 7 Edinburgh Acad 41, Perthshire 33 Peebles 35, Hawick 45 Jed-Forest 0, Scottish Academy 33 Haddington 12, Newcastle 31 Gala 5, Langholm 0 Melrose 28, Watsonians 45 Berwick 0.

Quarter-finals: Selkirk 33 Ed Acad 7, Peebles 24 Hawick 0, Scottish Academy 19 Newcastle 21, Melrose 5 Watsonians 36.

Semi-finals: Selkirk 22 Peebles 12, Newcastle 33 Watsonians 26.

Final: Selkirk 51 Newcastle 29.
