SELKIRK celebrated their return to the top flight of the Scottish Hydro Premiership with an electric performance against Currie to claim a historic win and a bonus point.
It was a remarkable victory for the newly promoted Borderers who trailed 8-21 at half time before producing a dynamic second half performance that had the 2006-07 champions Currie thoroughly rattled.
"I think fitness was a big factor and the resu
lts in the sevens tournaments showed that. Today we competed for 80 minutes" said Selkirk coach Kevin Barrie. But with typical honesty he added: "One area of concern was the amount of ball we lost in contact."
Currie, for whom Ross Weston exploited the new laws to good effect, looked in command at the break after scoring tries by Kiwi full back Johnnie Smith and replacement wing Mike Norton, and three penalties and a conversion by Smith.
Selkirk's dynamic start to the second half soon changed matters as first Ryan Crockett touched down and Michael McVie converted and then Fraser Harkness dashed through the Currie defence for a brilliant solo try. In between these scores Currie stand-off Marc Fouche dropped a goal.
Then with the scoreline at 25-24 in favour of Selkirk, Smith missed a vital penalty kick, but not so McVie at the other end who drove the ball between the sticks to ensure a famous win.
