GRETNA have resigned from the Scottish Football League, the League confirmed today.
An SFL spokesman said: "I have this morning received intimation from the Gretna FC administrator of their resignation from the Scottish Football League with immediate effect.

"I have accepted this resignation on behalf of the Scottish Football Lea
gue and accordingly, we now have a vacancy in the Third Division and are seeking applications."

Gretna's resignation promises a busy summer for the SFL and potential applicants for the vacancy in the Irn-Bru Third Division.

The SFL have set a deadline of Thursday June 12 for prospective new clubs to apply for membership.

Meanwhile, SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has announced that he will seek talks with league officials in an attempt to prevent a repeat of Gretna's demise.

Smith believes lessons must be learned over the role of owner and benefactor Brooks Mileson, who effectively pulled the plug on Gretna after his money had taken them to the top flight.

"It's very sad," Smith said. "Unfortunately the problem with Gretna was their success was down to the money of one person and there was no stability behind it because of that.

"That's something that maybe lessons have to be learned about, the stability in the game.

"If someone is putting a lot of money into a team and it's getting a bit of success for a while, is there any future for that team if that one person pulls out?

"I think all of us in Scottish football need to look at that, all the bodies, everybody involved in the game.

"The SFA, the SFL, the SPL will need to look very closely at these aspects of how the game is structured and financed."

Think It's about time one of the Mileston family actually said something.

Far too long an amount of silence!

Thanks for the moemories Gretna, what a wonderful day out we all enjoyed in May 2006 at the Cup Final.

At least you can hold your heads high in the knowledge you got close to lift the sliver lady than the Hibs, at least you tried.

Whoever is admitted to the 3rd division, it is imperative that the SFA have a an independent audit done on the admitted club, going back a few years and not just this season.

They supporters and players of these clubs who gain admittance to the SFA deserve nothing less, over the last 15 years to many fly by night owners have been allowed to run clubs into the ground.

SAME RULES APPLY !!!,

"At least you can hold your heads high in the knowledge you got close to lift the sliver lady than the Hibs, at least you tried."

and your head to head league record against Hearts matched them in points gained.

SAME RULES APPLY !!!

This is such a pity. They did so well in such a short period of time.

I want to see what Brooks Mileson's response is to this. It could be interesting.

It's not a very nice way to go. They didn't deserve this.

#7 Funny things, bogey teams. Sometimes a club can go 20+ games against certain opponents without winning....

I agree, #8. But will the media even bother asking Brooks Mileson, or one of his family?

A club that was formed in 1946 has been brought to it's knees in five years all thanks to it being used as a plaything. Let's hope the Hearts don't go the same way.

Just as well they won't be around after today then.

This should be done for every club in every division every year. Not just a once off. Some clubs have a cheek to call themselves professional.

Tim the liar straightener,

Sad for Gretna but it was inevitable.

Now I hope Hearts and Rangers also resign - just think how clean and decent Scottish football would be without them.

Tim,

Then you would just move you're bandwagon to jump on Dundee, Killie etc.

Give it a rest its the close season.

Xacobeo Hearts,

Galicia, feeling down! 03/06/2008 22:29:23
Sad day.

Not nice to see any football team going to the wall, no matter who they are.

Especially sorry for the TRUE fans, and it shouldn't make any difference because there's only a few of them.

They didn't deserve this to happen to them - even if they enjoyed the ride while it lasted.

Gutted for you - but I'm sure that is nothing compared to how you feel.

Mileson always seemed like a decent enough bloke but it NOW SEEMS that nobody is prepared to critisize him.

Admittedly I might not have all the details but without any other evidence being available it SEEMS to me that there's only one person who can be blamed for this fiasco.

Surely some kind of statement from him, or at least his family, is the least that could be done.

I hope he recovers his health soon, it's just a pity that it's now to late for Gretna FC.

RIP Gretna - but many of us will remember you and your finest moment, and it was my priveledge to share in it.

#7 How's it going, "Same Rules"?

I must say however, your comment "and your head to head league record against Hearts matched them in points gained" smacks of pique and, dare I say, desperation.

You'll just have to face up to it: Gretna reached the 2006 SFA Cup Final and your lot didnae.

Bleeding Heart...,

#17 Well said.

Encouraging to see someone willing to look beyond his own travails as a Hearts fan (and we have many!), and prepared to take time to offer a nice tribute to the Gretna club and its fans.

Take a bow, that man!
19

Xacobeo Hearts,

Galicia 03/06/2008 23:12:38
Cheers.

It was heart felt - I wouldn't wish extinction on anybody, not even my worst rivals like the OF or Real Madrid.

I was certainly dismayed in the 90's at the possibility of Hibs disappearing as rivalry is part and parcel of our game. And you need "the other side" it's part of what makes us who we are.

A lot of fans at times appear to deserve the worst but it surely doesn't take very much to put yourself in the others position and realise how you'd feel if your club disappeared.

And the Gretna fans, as I said earlier, definitely haven't done anyhting to deserve this.

Sad day as I said.

...and now it's time for a beer.

#21 What would YOU know about being a fan..?

Enlighten us - tell us why you support who you do and in the process convince us it has nothing to do with pseudo-religious/political views and/or glory-seeking on either your part or your father's...
