Gretna are on the long road back

Published Date: 30 August 2008
THE ceaseless march of football makes it easy to forget that this time last year Gretna were a fully-fledged top flight club. On the corresponding weekend last season Davie Irons took his team to face Rangers at Ibrox, where they played in front of almost 50,000 people.
Another time, another place. And another life for Irons. On Tuesday night he was spotted galloping across the Easter Road turf to embrace his Morton players after an epic 4-3 win over Hibs in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup. Mick Wadsworth, who took over as caretaker manager from Irons when the lifeblood began to visibly drain from Gretna, has been linked with a coaching job in St Kitts and Nevis. All the while weeds continue to creep up the disused floodlight pylons at Raydale Park, the extinct football club's old home.

Last week saw Gretna officially placed in liquidation, although it has been a formality since the club resigned from the Scottish Football League in June. This was the endgame anticipated by the illness which struck down Brooks Mileson, the club's eccentric and now ailing benefactor. Little has been heard of Mileson since February, although Carlisle United are now pursuing him for sponsorship money owed by the Sunderland-born businessman. On the same day that insolvency firm Wilson Field filed Gretna's liquidation papers Mileson was being described as "too slow and retarded" to attend a court in Carlisle. A medical professor was quoted as saying that although the exact nature of his illness remains unclear, "its effects are evident". The judge ruled that medical evidence must be provided in ten weeks to prove Mileson is unfit to fight the case.

When surveying the wreckage of a club which had existed since the 1940s it is difficult to escape the feeling that the locals have been poorly served. As ever in such times the fans, along with those local small businesses among the long list of creditors, have born the emotional and economic brunt, but have impressed with their fortitude. A new club, called Gretna 2008, has won each of three competitive games this season after their application to join the East of Scotland League was accepted. A year ago it was Ibrox, this afternoon it is the Civil Service Sports Ground in Muirhouse, for a date with the Civil Service Strollers.

The last time Gretna played an Edinburgh-based side was at the end of last season, when the club signed-off with a 1-0 win over Hearts. Gretna subsequently folded, but the club badge prevails, as does redoubtable former chairman Ron McGregor.

The administrator was quite helpful on this bit of detail," he reported this week. "He (David Elliot] let Gretna 2008 buy the rights to the old club badge. And the team wear black and white hoops. At the public meeting held to set up the club there was a very strong desire voiced to go back to the old black and white hoops. The move away from that, to white tops, was one of the cosmetic changes implemented under Brooks Mileson's management."

McGregor was surprised to receive a call from Mileson earlier this month. "We have a mobile number that he used when he was in better health," he said. "Most of the time it goes unanswered. Just once we had a reply from him to say he was still in the hands of neurologists at Newcastle. His voice was certainly not his normal speaking voice. Most of the conversation, you won't be surprised to hear, consisted of a bit of a diatribe against the administrator."

McGregor provides the old Gretna with a link to its old English Northern League past of tottie scones and generous drams. He is one of the few who have remained. Mileson moved on to fight another battle, while the players have scattered to the four winds.

McGregor has watched all of Gretna 2008's games this season, and clearly yearns for the day when they will play back in the small border town. At present the team is based in nearby Annan, the town of rivals – and chief beneficiaries of Gretna's demise – Annan Athletic. Elliot, now the liquidator, has not been receptive to the new club's wish to hire out Raydale Park on a game-by-game basis. He is concerned it gives the impression of squatters at a time when he is seeking to entice bids for the land.

There is some activity at Raydale Park, although it occurs in the car park. The Sunday market which sustained Gretna during their non-league days remains, and provides a modest income stream for the liquidator.

This sum will go towards paying back those creditors who next gather on 11 September, at a hotel in Carlisle rather than Gretna. McGregor suspects the change of venue is because "a lot of resentment remains in the town". Clearly not everyone has moved on.

thepundit - how anyone can call Walter a good tactician after playing for a draw in Kaunas is beyond me. He was sacked from Rangers and almost destroyed Everton before being sacked there too. His philosophy is - do as I say or I will kick and punch you up and down the dressing room. I bet he beats his missus if the dinner's cold.

It's the Robson/Skoosh dilemma isn't it.

On the one hand, Brown is beginning to show some form these last few weeks, and to drop him on Sunday wouldn't help his confidence....it's almost like saying 'I don't trust you in the big games'.
If Strachan is seeing Brown as his preferred option in the longer term, I think he'll have to start him.

On the other hand, whilst some of the signs this season have been encouraging, Brown still , to my mind, hasn't done enough to convince that he should get the jersey on Sunday ahead of Robson.
We know what we'll get with Robbo...robust defensive midfielding and he'll put himself about. He fires the whole team up and gets the adrenaline flowing.

So, it seems to me that whilst I would rather Robbo started, Strachan is more likely to go with Brown because he sees him as the long term solution and it could undermine his confidence were he to drop him today.

So, my money says Brown will start, but there is a word of caution for Brown : if he fails to deliver tomorrow and Strachan has to sub him for Robbo, AND, Robbo comes on and plays well, I'd say that is Brown permanently out of the starting line up until Robbo is injured...Robbo will have won the battle for the jersey for sure.

Do decent Rearrangerz fanz really wonder why they have such horrendous fan base troublez when they have the likes of post #4 speaking on Rearrangerz behalf.

Look at it this way....should Rearrangerz still be on the go as an active footballing club in,lets say 20 years from now,the Rearrangerz name will still and always be synonymous with The City of Manchester Riots, perpetrated by Rearrangerz fanz representing Rearrangerz Football Club.

Denial is ignorance.
Isn`t it.

Helter Skelter,

Bougherra might find that this game has come a bit too soon for him.
If Celtic get the first goal and start piling on the pressure for a second, he might find the situation a bit too much.

All the players say that they can't hear each other and the fans really raise the temperature and Bougherra might implode in that scenario.

A sclaffed clearance, a short pass back, getting nutmegged...it only takes two or three such mistakes before a player finds himself really struggling, particularly a player unused to the hurly burly of the Glasgow derby.

Bougherra will be desperate that his first few touches go ok. His and Weir's problem is when Maloney starts running at them with Big Sami sprinting along the line and McGeady and Naka ghosting in on the flanks.

Against Falkirk and Hearts I think that's fair comment but then he was barely tested in either of those games.

However, his report card from Pittodrie isn't as good as the laptops would have us all believe. There were some very shaky moments in there, and if he found Pittodrie a challenge, he doesn't know what's hitting him tomorrow.

84

Well, there will be two on McGeady, will there also be two on MALONEY ?

That will leave 6 outfield players to deal with our other 8.

He is the only striker on Rearrangerz books who could cause us problems tomorrow.

There have been a few demo jobs in this match in the past as both sets of supporters know.

I cant see it tomorrow, I think it will be fairly tight and not much between the 2 sides after 90mins.

Going on last seasons results the home side just seemed to have the advantage.

Lets hope we will be able to talk about the match, and not the refereeing decisions.

Brian

Don't you think Walter will go for 4-5-1 with Miller as the lone striker ?

I think Cousin is your best man for that role but you get the impression that they're one step short of speaking through lawyers.

As per usual, the laptops have droned on relentlessly about Gravesen and Balde's wages being a stone 'round Celtic's neck, but actually , when you add up Hemdani, Cousin and Darcheville, there must be close to £50k a week going out on those three.

I'm glad...I think Cousin would cause us problems , but I think Miller can be contained and the same is true of any of the other options.

Walter for my money will go for :

mcgregor
broadfoot weir bougherra papac
Davis Mendes Thomson Lafferty Beasly
Miller

I've gone for 3v1 to The Champions, the leather belts.

Listening to Keevans on snide saying that it's a big priority that Celtic sign another striker....hing oan, we've got the best 2 in the spl, Maloney, Samaras and there's 2 or 3 behind them who could do a job for us at domestic level.

I'm very cheesed off that it looks like we ain't getting a new left back. I think that is the one and only area in the squad where we are light.
Wilson has himself said that he won't know until after about 8 or 9 matches whether his old injury will resurface, and if it happens again, he could be out the game altogether.
Apparently he only has a very small amount of cartilage left to work with, and whether he could be mended again is open to doubt.

So with a big ? over his fitness, that leaves us Naylor for cover who was at times dreadful last season.

We've had the whole transfer window to find a left back and it's a poor show that one couldn't be found.
I mean, the Samaras and Maloney deals didn't draw from our scouting resources over the summer, and mCourt was signed at the start of the window.

Loovens wasn't on the radar until we played Cardiff in a friendly.

You could say that the entire scouting machinery has had a free hand all summer to find us a left back....Tamas had been pretty much scouted before the window opened.

And how did Gretna get on today in the SPL or SFA.

43

Daillyman,

99 Helter

Loovens was not on the tic radar until WS admitted he was interested in the player.

Tamas was a dead cert for the tic until you're team would not pay more than 16k a week, similar to Shittu not signing with the Gers, it came down to money.
44

Helter Skelter,

30/08/2008 18:55:46
101

Brian, if you remember correctly, WS's first bid for Loovens was made early in the Summer, and we were still chasing Tamas for several weeks after that.

The Tamas deal rumbled on for ages after WS's interest in the player was well known.

Then, the Tamas deal collapsed before it was back on the agenda, and then it collapsed again.

Then Hamburg confirmed that Celtic had expressed an interest in their centre half - can't remember his name - and then, out the blue, Celtic put in an offer
for £2m for Loovens.

By the time Celtic put their bid in for Loovens, more than 4 weeks had passed since WS's first bid had been rejected.

It was in fact only AFTER Celtic put in a £2m bid that WS then put in a second bid for £2.5m which, within an hour, Celtic matched.

The player was free to make a straight choice.

45

Daillyman,

30/08/2008 19:01:08
102

I am not disagreeing with you're scenario time wise.

All I said was that the tic showed no interest in Lovvens until RFC were getting down to the wire in chasing him.

Player made his choice good luck to him.

Tamas like Shittu demanded more than either club was willing to pay, hence neither was signed.

Another way of looking at it is that WS wasn't prepared to raise his bid closer to Cardiff's asking price UNTIL he saw that Celtic were interested.

If Walter had put his money where his mouth was 4 or 5 weeks earlier, I have not the slightest doubt that Loovens would have signed for rangers because at that time, Celtic weren't interested.

Walter hesitated too long, Celtic's other signing targets fell through, Loovens came onto the agenda, and Celtic were prepared to get much closer to what Cardiff were looking for...when WS saw that, he got up of his proverbial, but it was too late.
49

Daillyman,

30/08/2008 19:11:37
106

Unlike some of the posters I do not have a lot of inside information. In my opinion the Loovens deal for him to come to Ibrox broke down when we insisted that a player we wanted out of Ibrox be included in the deal plus a bit of cash going the way of Cardiff.

Only my opinion.
50

Helter Skelter,

30/08/2008 20:07:32

Brian I'm only going by what was reported in the press.

It was widely reported that Cardiff made a bid for Boyd, indeed it was confirmed by the cardiff manager.

The press suggested it was around £2m, possibly £2.5m.

Walter had aleady had a bid of a reported £1.5m for Loovens turned down.

Clearly, Walter had the option of almost a straight swap of Boyd for Loovens, but he came out in the press saying he wouldn't sell Boyd.

So, whatever way you look at it, if Walter had moved quicker either with more cash or a swap deal, he would have got Loovens.

The way Boyd has started the season, I'll bet he is beginning to have doubts about that. My guess, and it's a complete guess, is that Walter's instincts told him to cash in on Boyd, but he feared that it might be the last straw with the fans what with KM coming in and the (then) possible departure of Cuellar, as Walter would have known about the release clause.

So, my guess is that the decision to retain Boyd was purely to appease the fans. It's been clear from the get go that Walter doesn't fancy Boyd, he just brought in three new strikers...it doesn't make any sense to keep Boyd when there's a £2m+ offer on the table for him from Cardiff, especially when money is tight and you desperately need a new central defender (Loovens).

But somehow, I don't think your implication about the quality of my postings is particularly objective.
