Published Date: 02 July 2008
FOR the second successive season, Rangers face a potential showdown with Vladimir Romanov's Kaunas side in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
The intriguing match up failed to materialise a year ago when Kaunas surprisingly lost their first qualifying round tie against Zeta of Montenegro, but the Lithuanian champions were handed another chance to book a trip to Ibrox by yesterday's draw in Nyon.

This time, the Lithuanian champions, backed by Hearts' owner Romanov, must first overcome little known Santa Coloma of Andorra in the first qualifying round. They will be strong favourites to do so and secure a place in the second qualifying round against top-seeded Rangers.

The Ibrox club will be at home in the first leg on 29 or 30 July before travelling for the return a week later. On 1 August, in between the two matches, the draw for the third qualifying round will take place and Rangers will hope to remain on course for a place in the lucrative group stage of Europe's elite club competition.

If the qualifying ties are normally defined by tension, with so much at stake, a meeting with Kaunas would also have some fascinating sub-plots. Andrius Velicka, the former Kaunas and Hearts striker who will join Rangers from Viking Stavanger on 14 July, could make his debut against his former club.

Kaunas' current squad contains two players among the many who have been loaned to Hearts since Romanov took control of the Tynecastle club, defender Tomas Kancelskis and midfielder Linas Pilibaitis.

Ricardas Beniusis, the striker who had a disastrous spell at Hearts, also remains on the Kaunas books but is currently on loan at Latvian club Metalurgs. The current Kaunas coach is Andrei Zygmantovich, a former USSR international who is one of those short-listed by Romanov for the current managerial vacancy at Hearts.

Currently leading the Lithuanian league after 13 games of the 2008 campaign, Kaunas should be too strong for Santa Coloma, the tiny village team who won their first Andorran title last season. They did, however, beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-0 at home in the first leg of a Uefa Cup first qualifying round tie last season before losing the return 4-0 in Israel.

Rangers manager Walter Smith, who plans to utilise new recruit Velicka's knowledge of Kaunas, fully anticipates a meeting with the Lithuanians and is confident his squad will be well prepared for the first but most crucial challenge of their season.

"We just have to make sure that our pre-season preparation is thorough and that we're ready to play at that time," Smith told rangers.co.uk. "We were last season and I'm sure we will be again.

"It's always interesting when you're looking at teams that have to play out a first-round tie and I think Kaunas would be the favoured side to go through there. The Andorran side, I don't think many people would know too much about and I think Kaunas themselves would think that they will be favourites.

"We were close to playing Kaunas last season. They will be of a good standard and they will be a strong team.

I hope Andrius will be able to help us but he's been away from the club for quite a while and I think they have quite a large turnover of staff.

"He'll obviously be able to keep us up to speed with what's happening there but when you look on the face of it, you know that you're going to face a tough first tie."

Rangers negotiated a path beyond Zeta and then Red Star Belgrade to reach the group stage last year, part of a 19-game European campaign which ultimately took them all the way to the Uefa Cup final and gave the club's coffers an enormous boost.

"Financially, every season there is a lot made of it and quite rightly so," added Smith. "As we found out last season, it makes a big difference to any club. The amount of money that is available for qualifying to the group stages is of enormous benefit.

"We know that these games are nervous occasions for everyone involved and I would hope that the experience and the confidence we gained will help us handle the situation."

A Rangers team made up primarily of the players who finished last season should be a solid enough unit to get through this round without any dramas - the real challenge to CL qualification will come in the next round - some tough opposition in there.

Oh that's right, there are no SPL games because the season doesn't start till August. So in effect, Rerrangers have been granted a season extension without even asking for one.

Ain't that nice?

This is an old chestnut, and one of the reasons that there was talk a while back about Rangers and Celtic breaking away from the SPL.

The contract is between sentanta and the SPL. Take or leave it, if you are a member.

There is a famous story going back to the Scotland win at Wembley in 1967. I, along with a group of punters, tried to get that game released on video (at it would have been at the time) for years.

Pushed the SFA hard, but they couldn't help in the end as it turned out the recording rights belonged to the English FA, and the bas#tards said it had no commercial value, so they wouldn't release it.

Anyway, they finally sold the rights.

Point being, whoever has the rights, has the right.

Celtic and Rangers are basically being shafted in this deal in that the money on the table is entirely for the rights to matches involving them .

Both teams only recieve a small percentage of the money in order to subsidise the rest of the league.

In other countries with similar standards of league to ours top teams negotiate their own TV rights package. For example in Portugal Porto walked off with 20 million last year in a league not much, if at all, better than ours.

Celtic and Rangers only have themselves to blame. They had the chance to veto the 8-4 voting split but backed down and accepted it rather than calling the bluff of the otehr SPL teams to resign and form their own league. They should have held out as in Scotland the Glasgow clubs hold all the cards.

What we are left with is a situation where a very small tail is wagging a very large dog.

What should happen and what will inevitably happen is that Celtic and Rangers will negotiate their own deals with a compensation payment being made to the cannon fodder when they appear on TV.

Until then we Celtic and Rangers will be trapped under a glass ceiling.

Almost every manager in the SPL has fell foul of McCurries "handling" of games involving Rangers and made comment on the fact. A list of these incidents has been provided ad nauseum previously.

Surely such an outbreak of paranoia warrants investigation by the World Health Organisation.

The nearest you've been to the Scotsman paper is to wipe your bum wi it.

It is debatable whether that is before or after you use it to wrap your chips in.

Every referee is entitled to a mistake or too and even some Celtic fans are quick to turn an error into bias.

HOWEVAH

When referess , McCurry, is involved in such a litany of incidents all to the benefit of one team then questions are bound to be asked.

And they should be asked. Lets hope Craig Levein has a big enough pair of stones to take this one all the way.

The usual paranoid drivel about McCurry I see.

In the first Old Firm game of last season he disallowed a perfectly good Rangers goal and turned down a stonewall Rangers penalty.

In the CIS semi Hearts handled the ball twice plus brought down Darcheville in their box without McCurry giving a penalty.

You scraped a title, helped in part by referees and linesman over the season, and towards the end in particular. The myth of bias against CFC by the authorities was exposed yet again as paranoid drivel

I'd have thought that was cause for double celebration amidst the CFC support.Or have you lost a comfort blanket?

If its paranoia its sweeping the nation.

123

The fact that Rangers fans are jumping up and down when Celtic get a couple of marginal decisions in their favour confirms what we all know about Rangers history with getting their own way with the man in black.

Rangers have been getting these decisions x 100 for years with any questioning dismissed as "paranoia". Now Celtic have been given a couple and satans hounds have been well and truely released.

#24 Ferguson is a "good" player, but if he was as good as you intimate he would have made it in England surely.

And to claim he is one of the best Scotland has produced for years probably has some truth but the quality of what Scotland has produced for years has been extremely poor.

To be honest ever since I was a naive teenager I have never really bothered about such things as dodgy ref decisions as I used to think some you get some you don’t.

Yes over the years I did start to formulate the notion that especially in derby matches with RFC that it would move from a 50-50 chance of getting the split decisions to maybe 65-35 in favour of the bears but still I said lets just get on with it, sort of Stein like if you get my drift.

As I entered my more street savvy years I was certainly more aware of how the world operates and openly concede to non CFC/RFC fans that we often get decisions against the lesser teams that are very hard to justify and 99% of the neutral fans in Scotland equally know this.

For you guys however to keep labelling Celtic fans as just paranoid fools in light of the many clubs who have now suffered at the hands of pro RFC refs is just plain daft.

Accept you probably do have more Rangers supporting refs than any other club and accept that brings with it its own inherent problems. Are the ref’s cheats or are they just human like you and me and would find it very hard to give split decisions against their boyhood heroes.

The penalty that wasn’t given to Dundee Utd in the Cup final was one of the most outrageous decisions in a long time and if you can’t see that then maybe you’re incapable of genuine debate.

Agree he didn't do well in England.

I think he best is still to come, and I doubt if his leg injury will last for long.

Morning all, couple of quick points before I disappear to take the grandweans to their sports week.

In one of his earlier posts BTO mentioned the rights to the 1967 Wembley game. I have seen, not the whole game, but an English-edited highlights package - which makes it appear that we were the jammiest team alive to win that one. It looked as if we scored on our only three breakaways.

Barry Ferguson also got some stick earlier on. Now he's a good player IMO, but asked to choose between both players at their best - I'd pick Derek before his brother.

Euro 2008 showed, you need a midfielder able to move the ball on at pace, to keep the attacks fluid and Barry hasn't been doing that for the last couple of seasons.

With his injury history, I fear he either adapts to become the holding midfielder, or he goes - I do not believe he can continue to be the attacking fulcrum in midfield and don't believe he now has the pace and desire to make the late runs into the box a man is his position has to.

For that reason, letting Buffel go might not be WS's brightest move.
From a Scotland perspective, I've long argued Ferguson and Fletcher will struggle in the same midfield - I'd go with Fletcher, the younger player, but only if he was getting game time at MU.

Bazza is a very good player for RFC but he is wasted when he goes deep looking for the ball trying to be all MR Rangers and that.
He is best further up the field were his ability to find a colleague with an incisive pass is good.

Needs to let other players at Ibrox devolpe their personalities and not always need to be the dominating figure.

Survivor Of Riots,

Senior Uefa Officials within the corridors of power have stressed serious concerns at their impotence in dealing with certain issues.

This has been highlighted recently at their weak handling of the Manchester Riots and their inabilty to do anything re the ReaRangers appointed stooge at the SFA (still in a job despite being unable to secure a Scottish Cup Sponsor, failing to support his national team manager and abject mis-handling of the sinister minister).

Power strengthening articles are being added to their constitution and this is going through their beaurocratic processes which will take time.

As an ad-hoc interim measure to work outwith the articles and deliver a message to the rest of European teams who would be working outwith the spirit of the game, Uefa have made a short term decision to issue a statement to the ReaRangers.

Part time Priest and League Of Ireland referee Declan O'Flaherty has been appointed referee for ReaRangers forthcoming European qualifier.

Sorry you didnae enjoy the game. Maybe you should get a copy of the whole game, which is now available.

Agree that he needs to decide whether he is going to play deep, or push forward. Probably more when he plays for Scotland, and gets himself too far from the ball by chasing the play too much.

Still, all said a done he is a great player.
