MOTHERWELL could be paired with the likes of AC Milan, Ajax and Sevilla in the Uefa Cup first round but striker Chris Porter is hoping for an "easy tie".

The Fir Park side go into today's draw as one of 40 unseeded teams looking to upset the odds and make the group phase.

Aberdeen reached that stage – and beyond – last season courtesy of an away-goals triumph over Ukrainian side Dnipro, while Hearts beat Braga in the first round in 2004.

Motherwell, who finished an impressive third in the SPL last season, would be happy to be paired with a team of a similar standard in Monaco today, with a number of English teams also among the seeds, including Everton, Tottenham and Portsmouth.

Former Oldham striker Porter told club website www.motherwellfc.co.uk: "We are all really excited about the draw.

"We really want to make it through to the group stages so hopefully we will get an easy tie, if there is such a thing.

"Part of the reason I came up here in the first place was the opportunity to play European football and fortunately I don't have to wait much longer."

Here is the link to the BBC Sport Predictor:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotland/predictor/

I have set-up a minileague for all posters on here willing to join.

It’s just a bit of fun and it starts with next weekend’s SPL fixtures.

All you need to do is go to the link and create your own membership. Try and make your user id as close to the one you use on here, so we all know who you are.

NB. If you are already registered and have points on the board, please re-register with a slightly different user id for this minileague, so that everyone starts on ZERO points.
Anyone joining with points already accrued will be removed.

Once you’re in, select “My Minileagues” and enter . . .

The Scotsman Forum

. . . as the minileague name.

The password is . . .

thescotsman

Once you have joined the minileague, you can start making your predictions. You get 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score. After each set of fixtures you can check the minileague table to see where you are and who is on top etc.

Enjoy it. It’s just a bit of fun.

I hate to make you look silly,, the RFC did not qualify for the Eufa Cup, or the CL group stages,, you must remember what that was like from the Artmedia fiasco.

Onwards to the SPL title for the Gers this season.

'Scotland's only hope in Europe.'

I agree that so far all of Scotland's representatives in European football this season have been completely hopeless.

Hope the Well have a good run in Europe, it will make up for the awful results from the Gers and QotS.

Gers fans you’re clutching at straws, Artmedia was a freak result and was a long time ago, the Celts are top of the league, soon playing the EC holders in a glamour tie and I confidently predict we will be 3 points ahead of the Gers by Sunday evening.

The Treble! Ho Ho Ho, knocked out of Europe with the financial implications of that, a selling club (you sell your best player every transfer window), your biggest rival welcomed by Manchester home of the European Champs, somewhere you will never be welcomed again.

The Gers are in decline you just can’t argue against it.

Where is Media 1 we need his input! Does he also agree that the Gers are in decline, 2001-2008 the Celts have one 6 out of 8 home league titles, is that dominant or what?

Please Gera fans be realistic this season you performed beyond your capabilities last season, Celtic have the stronger squad and will overcome anything your throw at us.

Yesterday was the day that all at rearrangerz were dreading...the CL draw bringing back painful reminder of what could have been in Kaunas.

The sight of The Champions appearing alongside the cream of Europe in the world's premier club competition was enough to have Minty clutching for the sick bag....Reports now suggest that if Celtic repeat their performance of last season and manage 3 home wins, then, wait for it folks, the cash pay out will be £16.5m. If we add to that an elusive away win, we go over the £17m threshold.

There's no doubt that the elimination of rearrangerz has given Celtica multi million pound windfall....but it has also cut Rearrangerz turnover...sponsorship, gate receipts, etc...when you add that, there is a 'financial swing' of between £20m and £25m to Celtic.

Minty has seen the writing on the walls. This season is sh*t or bust for Rearrangerz. If this were to happen again next year, it really would be the end....the spl would become a one horse race.

That's why Minty is 'all in' in terms of spending. That's why Minty has spent £17m this window. This is the 'last stand', and defeat for rearrangerz in the league this season will change the landscape of Scottish football forever.

Look guys I'm not going to defend bad refereeing decisions when it comes to the Celts, but can you honestly say we get more than the Gers? The reason both OF clubs get more dodgy decisions is because we are the clubs virtually always putting pressure on the opposition, therefore by the nature of probability it's more likely that controversial decision will occur. That's all I have to say on the matter. The Celts won the league fair and square last year, if you don't like it tough, just accept our dominance like we had to accept your in the 1990s, by the way I'm realistic, the Celts have not done enough yet to convince me they will win the league, but have the Gers convinced you?

In all honesty I suggest this is the most important season for you guys since the 1990s, if you don't win the league do you even know if second place offers you a gateway to the Champs League next season? Bottom line for any club nowadays is they must get in the group stages of the Champs League, unfortunately for you guys you failed big time

Quite amusing listening to bears now prattle on with their very own conspiracy theories after years of Celts being ridiculed for the very same.

Strange logic but thats often the case for the boys down at Ibrox.

Anyway this weekends match should hopefully be a cracker and my view is that although Rangers have improved a bit in terms of creativity they will sorely miss Bazza, Cuellar and Hutton.

Celtic, should if they play to their potential, win in a comfortable manner playing attacking football.

Hail Hail

In the dark days of Andy Davis, Mike McURRY, Hugh Dallas et al, there was no tabloid 'ref watch' campaign at all.

Celtic fans were paranoid , and so was everyone else ( Aberdeen and Hibernian both lodged official complaints against Mcurry some years ago for alleged bias in favour of rearrangerz....as did Dundee U at the end of last season.

No foaming at the mouth media campaign then when Andy Davis made probably the most outrageous intervention by a linesman in the history opf Scottish football to effectively hand Rearrangerz the title.

The Jim Whites, Chick Youngs, Jim Traynors, Bill Leckies, Darryl Kings, BFDJs et al weren't bothering their 3rses about refereeing standards then, but took great pleasure in dismissing as 'paranoid' even the most reasonably stated doubt about refereeing standards : 'referees have got an extremely hard and difficultjob to do' came the hackneyed response.

But, after three in a row, it's all changed. Now, there IS a problem with referees. And you can't turn on a radio or pick up a back page without some laptoployalist crying his eyes out about 'the standards of referees'.

Shame.
22

Helter Skelter,

29/08/2008 12:19:25
Incidentally, there is persuasive anecdotal evidence that it was Hugh Dallas' custom to warn the linesmen before EVERY match that he and he alone called the shots for free kicks.

Dallas had a great aversion towards linesman having any control over the match.

If that is true, then Andy Davis stepped out of line by even raising his flag for the penalty...he was, from the off, disobeying instructions...he was sticking his neck out from the get go.

There never was an infringement on Kyrgiakos, it never looked remotely as though there had been, Davis had a lousy view , not half as good as Dallas', AND, to cap it all, he had, apparently, been instructed NOT to intervene under ANY circumstances.

No media witch hunt of Andy Davis.

Off-Course, Dallas had the power to overrule him, point out that he'd had a better view, and most importantly, point out that Davis was talking through his 3rse....but Dallas disn't, and we never expected him to.

"No foaming at the mouth media campaign then when Andy Davis...." (#37)

I must have imagined the nine pages about the Davis call in the "Daily Ranger".

You've got to laugh at some Celtic fans. Their team have had every big refereeing mistake going for them so far this season but still they think there's some conspiracy against them.

The Great Pettifogger can't tie his laces half the time without collapsing in a heap and the thought of consulting him for the defence of anything other than a bottle of brandy is irksome indeed.

Still, The Champions must now prepare for a third consecutive thrilling and financially rewarding adventure into The Champions League.

Already the only Scottish club to have reached the knock out stage twice, we must seek to make it a third AND aim to become the first Scotish club to reach the dizzy heights of the last 8.

A last 16 placing will yield a whopping £17m, and you can safely add another £5m to that should we make the last 8.

You get £2m for winning the spl, so it would be like 11 titles in a 'wanner', in financial terms.

26

Helter Skelter,

It just goes to show you that the grass can always seem greener.

Last year, I cursed the luck of the Scottish Champions when we kicked of our Champions League campaign away to £40m summer spenders Shakthar Donesk...I remember wishing that we began our campaign at home which would hopefully give us a win under our belts and set us up nicely.

But be careful what you wish for : this season we start against the danish side at Paradise, and you can say that anything less than a win puts even third spot in some doubt.

It's possibly the most important match to win in the sense that, on paper at least, it will be the 'easiest' three points we can collect in all 6 games.

The Champions will not fail us, and I expect the bhoys to be at their best and send the danes home with a nasty old 3v0 defeat to mull over.

Motherwell never got to play at the San Siro with their draw, whereupon they could watch "Walters" new-look,new season Rearrangerz squad clean up(literally) after them.

However,Nancy will be a nice little earner and a European highlight to look forward to as the domestic season alone can have fans pulling their hair out demanding and insisting on more bangs for their bucks.

For example, take Rearrangerz and their heaving, yet still believing(only just)screaming hordez, who are guaranteed nothing but domestic boredom to while away their time.
And all because of Hutton.

"Walter" and David scheming away behind their heaving horded fanz back to undermine their efforts both at home and in Europe when they pulled that one off.
That then allowed them the confidence to con their heaving still believing hordez yet again with the-"not for sale"-Cuellar cow dung.
Cow dung right between the eyes of every Rearrangerz supporter in existence.
The only difference being that those Rearrangerz fanz had travelled from the four corners of the globe only to be cow dunged good and proper !!

Its W.A.R.(T)....

......as well as any other Rearrangerz fanz who might have the temerity to challenge "Walter"-"I thought they were booing me"- Smith.

Isn`t it.

I would agree that Celtic have a chance of progressing to the last 16 although you were slightly fortunate last year with a far easier group.
Yes i know Milan were the champions but they were a poor side last year as thier final league position proved.
Benfica were also poor, finishing begind a Sporting Lidson team who were branded rotten after we knocked them out UEFA.

Second time in a row that Celtic have been drawn in the same group as the European Champions. You'd think as a Celtic fan I'd be scunnered; not a bit of it! The whole point of the Champions League is to be tested against the very best that Europe can offer. And the way that we have dealt with such teams in the recent past at Parkhead, I suspect that there's a few teams in Europe who were thankful that they weren't drawn in the same group as us!

Why do you try and score points on this forum with Celtic fans re the Dallas incidents from several years ago when only in the last few months thousands of Rangers fans have wrecked the city centre of Manchester causing mayhem and inflicting violence onto another group of innocent bystanders?
