EDINBURGH RUGBY and Watsonians are down-playing a friendly match which is expected to go ahead at Myreside next Tuesday evening.
The Celtic League team have confirmed the fixture which was revealed in yesterday's Evening News. However, in a statement Edinburgh added: "We are staging a practice/training match against Watsonians on Tuesday evening, but it will be three slots of
20 minutes as opposed to any kind of formal game."

More recognition for the fixture would have further strengthened links to the Celtic League scene for a Watsonian club who, initially, gave up 13 of their Premiership-winning side to centrally-run rugby.

The last time a club side faced Edinburgh was in August 2006 when Heriot's lost 61-7 (try count: 9-1) to an Edinburgh development team in a fixture which, admittedly, gave rise to concerns about a mis-match.

Myreside was the last club ground Edinburgh played at when they entertained Tonga last August.

Meanwhile, among those training with Edinburgh in a special session at Melrose yesterday was Heriot's winger Marc Teague who is keen to win a contract.

• EDINBURGH ACCIES will face Haddington in a friendly at Knox Academy tonight (7.15), while champions Boroughmuir face Stewart's-Melville at Inverleith tomorrow.

I've always thought rugby in this country will improve when it gets taken out of the private schools, and into the state schools. Here I am, reading an article about Watsonians, Heriots and Stewarts-Melville. Why not throw in Merchiston, Fettes, Loretto and the Edinburgh Academy for good measure?!

It would be nice if we heard more from the many non-fee paying schools in Edinburgh, which play rugby. The one exception here is Boroughmuir.

Why aren't the Royal High School up there, or St Augustines or Forresters or Broughton High? I suspect it's a two way thing. The SRU isn't putting enough into developing this area, and the local authority only sees sport in terms of an occasional game of football and a run around the pitch...

Why downplay this match? Heriots played Leicester a few seasons ago in a similar session with 20 minute periods and it was a huge success so why are we being mealy mouthed about thus match? It's almost as if they are saying - "we're having a wee game but don't want anyone to come!" Another example of how to get it wrong when so much good would have been easier to achieve.
